Geelong Mechanic Radiator Repairs

Our Geelong mechanics like to see radiators filled with coolant.

We get lots of customers calling to ask about what type of coolant they should use for topping up their radiator. As Geelong mechanics specialising in cooling systems, we can give you the right advice to make sure your car continues to run smoothly and stays cool.

There are a few things to consider when topping up your cooling system:

  • NEVER open a radiator cap or any cap with a warning symbol on it when the engine is hot – this can result in third-degree burns!
  • It’s safest and best to only check and top up your cooling system when the engine is cold. A good time to do this would be first thing in the morning before you even start the engine.
  • Unless you are 100% sure of the exact brand and type of coolant that is in your cooling system it is best to top it up with regular water.
  • Coolant is poisonous so contact with the mouth and eyes should be avoided. If any coolant does come into contact with your mouth please seek medical advice. If any coolant does come into contact with your eyes please seek help to rinse out immediately.
  • If you are ever unsure of how to check your coolant level and you are in the Geelong area please feel free to call our Grovedale Workshop so one of our friendly mechanics can show you the best way to do so.

You can see the old water pump on the right has been run in a cooling system without coolant which has caused irreversible damage and costly avoidable repairs.

A lot of people ask “What is the point of putting coolant in my engine? Can’t I just use water?” Coolant contains corrosion inhibitors, this stops any corrosion or rust build up on the metal components of the engine and keeps them functioning correctly. Filling your cooling system with only water would quickly rust away and damage a lot of key engine components like water pumps, radiators, welsh plugs and even the engine block and cylinder head themselves. This could quickly become very costly to repair and could even lead to complete engine failure and extensive mechanical repairs by our mechanics in Geelong.

At Always There Automotive our Geelong mechanics recommend the cooling system in your vehicle is flushed and refilled with new coolant every 2 years. This will keep your cars engine in tip top condition. It will not only save you money in the long run, but it will keep all of the components of the cooling system clean and functioning correctly. This will also help prevent any breakdowns that can be a huge inconvenience.

If you are in Geelong or close by and would like to book in to have your coolant replaced call the team at Always There Automotive today. A coolant flush can be carried out in our fully equipped workshop or in your very own driveway by our friendly Geelong Mobile Mechanic.
