But every now and then there is a car in the workshop that makes our mechanics stop for a moment to simply admire its beauty.
The classic 8 Series BMW that graced the workshop this week was one of those vehicles and we feel a little privileged that the owner of this classic car from the 1980s entrusted us with caring for his treasure.
The Beemer was in for a mechanical service and new rims and tyres and our team couldn’t help but take a few moments to stand back and admire this classic’s graceful lines, subtle beauty and hidden power. As you can see, we even took a picture.
What makes the 8 Series such a beauty to behold? Well, from a mechanic’s perspective the BMW8 Series was a ground-breaking machine. The company spent more than $1 billion developing the vehicle, and the top-of-the-line beast – and it is a beast – had a V-12 motor with a six-speed gearbox. The car was so powerful it was limited to 250 kilometres an hour but if you removed the limiter the six-speed manual would punch out a top speed of 305kmh. Think of it – 305kmh! That’s three times our speed limit!
The features go on and on – the first super car melding a V12 with a six-speed gearbox, the first car with a wiring system that became an industry standard, one of the first cars with an electronic throttle system. The 8 Series was a game changer on so many levels.
